Local Author Celebration Series: The Art of Burlesque Costuming
Join Iona Fortune, a burlesque dancer and art historian, as she dissects the history behind the costumes so lovingly worn—and taken off— by burlesque performers. From the 1890s to the 1990s, North American burlesque was a staple of entertainment, showcasing quick-reveal and slow-peel costumes that influenced the stage and screen.

About the Speaker: Iona Fortune is a burlesque dancer and art historian. She has been performing as Iona Fortune around the country for the last 7 years. She is interested in the intersection between burlesque, costumes, culture and history. Fortune is originally from Lincoln and graduated from Iowa State University in 2018. She holds a BA in Art History and a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Classical Studies. Since 2023, she’s been researching and writing about the history of burlesque in Nebraska, shedding light on Nebraska burlesque history by publishing articles on her website, producing burlesque shows, and created “zines.”
