Exploring Watercolor Class With Telagio Baptista

Join us at the Joslyn Castle & Gardens beginning July 18th and ending August 22nd for a wonderful artist workshop series. Explore the magic of watercolor painting with renowned artist Telagio Baptista!

Student artists are welcome to take a single class, or reserve for a 3 class package or the entire workshop. The bulk class reservations include a discounted rate.

Each class installment is 4 hours of concentrated instruction from Telagio. Supplies are not included in the tuition, please see below for a full list of recommended supplies. 

Artists of all abilities, beginner to advanced, are welcome to participate. Classes will have changing locations week to week, to include outdoors in the gardens if weather permits.

EXPLORING WATERCOLOR

Discover the art of watercolor with us! We invite you to join in the creation of stunning images showcasing the beauty of Joslyn Castle & Gardens with continuous creative support one-on-one.

You have the option to select a workshop that is available for one day, choose any three weeks from the six-week schedule, or sign up for all six weeks of studios and outdoor painting.

Learn about Telagio Baptista's watercolor artistry and discover the secrets behind his numerous regional, national and international awards.

The fee for a single day-$95.

The fee for any 3-day workshop-$270.

The total fee for the six-week workshop package-$475.

The workshops will be held for 4 hours starting at 10 AM and ending at 2 PM.

Tuesday July 18, Tuesday July 25, Tuesday August 1, Monday August 14, Tuesday August 22, Tuesday August 29. 

Open to all levels.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

1st DAY in the studio: Tonal Value in Monochromatic (one-color)

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- Telagio will demonstrate the tonal value of a flower with only one color

- How to blend petals

- Embracing a limited palette into various tones, from light to dark

- Discover how to create a beautiful painting you can proudly display at home
 

2nd DAY plein air: Painting florals in 1-color

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- To understand and apply a one-color or more to flowers

- How to blend more than one flower, and put it all together

- A painting to take home
 

3rd-DAY in the studio: Three Primary Colors (red, yellow & blue)

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- Telagio will demo the use of a three-color for flowers and foliage

- How to mix red, yellow & blue to create a visual harmony of colors

- Discover the joy of painting and make a masterpiece to bring home
 

4th-DAY plein air: Painting Multi-Color Florals and Trees

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

_ Appling the fundamentals of painting flowers and foliage

- A painting to take home
 

5th-DAY in the Studio Architectural Rendering

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- Telagio will demonstrate composition and perspective

- How to paint bricks and other materials

- A comprehensive painting of Joslyn Castle, flowers, foliage, and trees
 

6th-DAY Plein Air & in the studio: Applying all Elements into a Painting

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- To exchange viewpoints and offer encouragement

- Sharing our skills and creative development is a great way to connect with others and grow together

- To encourage and explore the magic of watercolor

- To complete and review and complete all images one-on-one
 

SUPPLIES NEEDED

You can easily find all your art supplies at your local Mengelsen's, Blicks, Michaels, and Hobby Lobby.

PAINTS

Black or brown Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors or any other inexpensive brand in a tube (recommended for 1st day)

Alizarin Crimson (red), Cadmium Yellow & Prussian Blue, any brand (recommended for 3rd day)

PAPER

Approximately 11"-x14" 140lb Cold Press pad or block (Arches - a bit pricy, or Blicks recommended)

MOUNTING BOARD

If you're looking to mount your watercolor paper, use your trusty cookie sheet, 1/4' plywood, or any other stable board you have on hand. (12"x20" and I highly recommend using Gatorboard since it's lightweight and portable).

BRUSHES (synthetic sable)

Flats - 1/2" & 1"

Rounds - #1, #6 & #12

Filbert - #5

PALETTE

- White plastic with large painting wells

- White porcelain plates, easy to clean (optional)

OTHER SUPPLIES

- 2-water containers (one for clean, one for dirty water)

- Paper towels

- 2B pencil

- Small pencil sharpener

- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

- 1" Artist or masking tape

- Prismacolor Kneaded rubber eraser

- Masking fluid

- Snacks & drink

Close
