Come celebrate his artistic legacy with us as we explore his unique contributions to visual art and art history.
Eugene Kingman (1909–1975) was an American painter, muralist, cartographer, and educator. Kingman was also the longest serving director of the Joslyn Art Museum from 1946 to 1968.
Kingman was a prominent landscape painter who became known for his distinctive contributions to the Regionalist art movement in America. Kingman’s painting style is deeply rooted in the principles of Regionalism, a movement that emerged in the 1930s and sought to depict scenes of rural America, small towns, and the daily lives of the people within them. His works are characterized by their realism and attention to detail, often capturing the raw beauty of the American countryside.
Kingman also won multiple commissions from the United States Treasury Art Project during the New Deal era to create several notable public murals across the United States. A special mural, which Eugene Kingman painted in 1948, was displayed in the lobby of the New York Times for over 40 years (image below).
After his service in WWII as a strategic military cartographer, Kingman moved to Omaha and became the visionary director of the Joslyn Art Museum and raised his young family in Dundee.
Kingman's daughter Mixie Kingman Eddy and Grandson Quinlan Eddy are traveling to Omaha for this special weekend honoring Eugene Kingman.
Original works will be available for purchase. Food and beverage will be provided on Friday evening.
