Architecture on Tap - Trans-Mississippi Exposition

Thursday, August 1, 2024

Joslyn Castle & Gardens presents Architecture on Tap, a celebration of the historic communities and people that make Omaha unique.

Architecture on Tap is a happy hour history hang-out happening Thursdays in July and August! Grab a beer from Infusion Brewing Company, explore historic Joslyn Castle, then settle in for a low-key lecture presented by a local expert.

The Trans-Mississippi Exposition was but a flash in the pan of Omaha's history (June-November in 1898), but we're still talking about it to this day. The Exposition was Omaha's anwser to the popular World's Fairs, and an opportunity to project an image of the West’s success while appealing to potential settlers. The Renassaince-style buildings surrounding a five-block long central lagoon were an incredible architectural feat, but they were executived in a temporary and superficial manner.

Local author and historian Jeffrey Spencer will take us on a deep dive of this chapter of our history as told through the ambitions, controversies, criticisms, cultural attitudes, and technologies of the time!

Architecture on Tap is presented in partnership with AO, Lund-Ross Constructors, Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, Hanscom Park Studio, and Infusion Brewing Company. We are grateful for the support of Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

Doors open to the public at 5:30pm, and presentations start at 6pm.

Space is limited! Registration is $10 and this is a 21+ event!
